Who needs it.
What it covers.

Most Nassau County shops can do a NYS passenger inspection. Very few are licensed for federal FMCSA annual inspections. If your trucks cross state lines or operate in interstate commerce, federal law requires an annual inspection under 49 CFR Part 396. We are one of the only inspection stations on Long Island authorized to perform it.

Who It's Required For

Interstate Carriers

Any commercial motor vehicle operating in interstate commerce with a GVWR over 10,001 lbs is subject to FMCSA annual inspection requirements under 49 CFR Part 396. This covers most Class 6, 7, and 8 trucks, semi-trailers, and large passenger carriers.

  • Class 6–8 commercial trucks
  • Semi-trailers and full trailers
  • Trucks crossing state lines
  • CDL-required vehicles
  • Vehicles with DOT numbers
What Gets Inspected

CVSA Criteria

A federal annual inspection follows CVSA (Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance) standards. It covers all major vehicle systems. A vehicle that fails and operates anyway puts the carrier at significant liability and DOT fine risk. We inspect everything by the book — not a rubber stamp.

  • Brake systems — service and parking
  • Tires — tread depth, condition, pressure
  • Steering and suspension
  • Lighting and electrical
  • Coupling devices and fifth wheel
  • Fuel systems and exhaust
After the Inspection

Your Documentation

A passed federal annual inspection results in a completed inspection report under 49 CFR 396.21, which the carrier is required to retain for 14 months. We provide all required documentation. If a vehicle requires repairs to pass, we can handle most truck mechanical work on-site.

  • Official inspection report issued
  • FMCSA decal applied
  • 14-month retention documentation
  • Same-location repair available
  • Fleet compliance tracking

Inspection Questions

Straight answers.
No runaround.

What is an FMCSA annual inspection and who needs one?
An FMCSA annual inspection is a federally mandated safety inspection under 49 CFR Part 396 required for commercial motor vehicles operating in interstate commerce with a GVWR over 10,001 lbs. This includes most Class 6, 7, and 8 trucks, semi-trailers, and large buses. The inspection must be performed by a certified inspector at a licensed station — not every shop qualifies. Hempstead Tire Service is a licensed FMCSA inspection station at 265 Hempstead Turnpike, West Hempstead, NY. If your truck has a DOT number and crosses state lines, you likely need this annually.
What is the difference between a NYS inspection and a federal DOT inspection?
A NYS inspection is required annually for all vehicles registered in New York and covers state-mandated safety and emissions standards. A federal DOT (FMCSA annual) inspection is required separately for commercial carriers in interstate commerce, follows CVSA criteria under 49 CFR Part 396, and results in a federally recognized inspection sticker and report. A vehicle can have a valid NYS inspection and still be non-compliant with federal FMCSA requirements. Many Nassau County carriers need both — we perform both at the same location.
How long does a federal FMCSA annual inspection take?
A thorough federal annual inspection typically takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the vehicle type, configuration, and condition. Semi-trailers with complex brake systems and fifth wheel assemblies take longer than straight trucks. We recommend scheduling in advance — call (516) 485-2292. If repairs are needed to pass, we can often complete them same-day at the same location, avoiding a return visit.
Can you do the inspection and any needed repairs at the same location?
Yes. Hempstead Tire Service performs commercial truck repair including brakes, alignment, exhaust, and mechanical work on Class 6–8 vehicles. If a vehicle requires brake work or tire replacement to pass inspection, we handle it on-site. This matters for fleet operators who can't afford to move a truck between multiple shops to get through compliance.
Where can I get a federal FMCSA DOT inspection on Long Island?
Hempstead Tire Service at 265 Hempstead Turnpike, West Hempstead, NY 11552 is one of the few licensed FMCSA inspection stations on Long Island. Hours are Monday through Friday 7:30 AM–5:00 PM. Call (516) 485-2292 to schedule. We serve commercial carriers throughout Nassau County and western Suffolk.
